Anxiety & Depression

Personalized, non-invasive support for mood and mental wellness

Anxiety and depression are common concerns, and the right care plan depends on the individual. At evoyouthful, an Exomind consultation can explore whether non-invasive brain stimulation may have a role within a personalized mental-wellness plan. The Exomind platform has specific FDA-cleared applications for qualifying adults with major depressive disorder (MDD) and associated anxiety symptoms, adults with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and adolescents ages 15–21 with MDD.

The expanded FDA clearance is specific: for qualifying adults with MDD who have not achieved satisfactory improvement from prior antidepressant medication in the current episode, Exomind is cleared for treatment of depressive episodes and decreasing associated anxiety symptoms; it is also cleared as an adjunctive treatment option for adults with OCD and adolescents ages 15–21 with MDD. Broader discussions about anxiety, stress, focus, brain health, or other wellness goals are individualized and are distinct from these specific FDA-cleared applications. Exomind does not replace a comprehensive mental-health evaluation, coordinated care, or appropriate emergency support.

Understanding Anxiety & Depression

01

What Causes It

Anxiety and depression are complex conditions with multiple interacting causes. At the neurological level, they are associated with dysregulation of key neurotransmitter systems — particularly serotonin, dopamine, norepinephrine, and GABA — and with altered activity in specific brain circuits, including the prefrontal cortex (involved in emotional regulation and executive function) and the limbic system (the brain's emotional processing center). Chronic stress activates the HPA axis, leading to elevated cortisol levels that can damage the hippocampus and disrupt neurotransmitter balance over time. Hormonal imbalances — particularly low estrogen, testosterone, and thyroid hormone — are significant but frequently overlooked contributors to both anxiety and depression, particularly in midlife adults.

02

How It Looks & Feels

Depression typically presents as a persistent low mood, loss of interest or pleasure in activities that were once enjoyable (anhedonia), fatigue, difficulty concentrating, changes in sleep and appetite, feelings of worthlessness or hopelessness, and in severe cases, thoughts of self-harm. Anxiety manifests differently — as excessive, difficult-to-control worry, restlessness, irritability, muscle tension, sleep disturbance, and physical symptoms such as a racing heart, shortness of breath, or gastrointestinal upset. Many people experience both simultaneously (mixed anxiety-depressive disorder), and the two conditions share overlapping neurobiological mechanisms. Cognitive symptoms — brain fog, poor memory, difficulty making decisions — are common to both.

03

Contributing Factors

Genetic predisposition and family history
Chronic stress and HPA axis dysregulation
Hormonal imbalances (low estrogen, testosterone, thyroid)
Nutritional deficiencies (B vitamins, magnesium, omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin D)
Chronic inflammation and gut microbiome dysregulation
Sleep deprivation and circadian rhythm disruption
Trauma, adverse life events, and chronic pain
Social isolation and lack of meaningful connection
Substance use and medication side effects
